I think Natalie and I might need your assistance. Are you free today to help our girl get the turkey ready?

CHAPTER 12

After they finished breakfast and talked through a plan for that evening and the next morning, Bonnie headed to work. Natalie called Clara and her mom to ask them if they could each bring a dish since she wasn’t able to make all of them after all, and they, surprisingly, agreed. Then she sat herself down to see if she could pare down the menu for the next day. With Clara and Michelle contributing, did she and Bonnie really need to make six side dishes? Or would four suffice? She pondered as her pencil hovered over the list, poised to cross out the cranberry ambrosia salad she’d planned on setting in the fridge overnight.

She really wasn’t up for being on her feet—foot— for an hour to get all the ingredients together for it. Maybe they could settle for just the canned cranberry sauce this year.

No sooner had she scribbled that and the lemon-glazed saffron buns off her list did the doorbell ring. She tried to pry herself out of her chair and her ankle gave a twinge.

“Coming!” She hollered at the door, hunting for her crutch, when she heard it swing open on its own. “What the–”

“I let myself in, I hope you’re not naked!” Shawn poked his head in through the crack in the door with his hand over his eyes. “Unless you’re cool with that, in which case–”

“Shawn! What the hell are you doing here?” Natalie’s tone was good-humored as she slumped back into the chair, grateful she didn’t have to get up. I am so glad he’s got an extra key.

“So from your late-night text, I’m guessing you found the Elf on the Shelf?” He peeked through his fingers, a wide, shit-eating grin taking up the lower half of his face.

The smile she’d been wearing instantly morphed into a glare. “Yes. And I have the bruise on my ass to prove it.”

“Did it scare you that bad?” As Shawn made his way into the house, Natalie realized he was dragging what looked like a model spaceship behind him. She craned her neck so she could get a better view down the hallway from the kitchen.

“Shawn, what is–”

“Bonnie texted and said you needed reinforcements!” He grunted, planting the metal contraption in front of the kitchen table and spreading his hands in a “Ta-da!” Gesture.

She blinked. “From space?”

“No, silly, for the turkey! Ain’t you never seen a turkey fryer before?”

“Oh no.” Natalie put her hands up. “No way, Shawn. I’ve ordered a perfectly beautiful organic heritage turkey which should be in the mail today, and I’m not going to ruin it by drowning it in oil. I’ve got enough on my plate–”

“Nat, Nat, Nat. You’re not going to be frying anything. I am!” Shawn put his hands on his hips like a superhero and gave her a toothy grin.“I feel awful about falling on top of you the other night.
